A cheap mini bench lathe doesn’t have to stay cheap-looking.
This project is a free, 3D-printable upgrade for the generic mini bench lathes commonly sold on Temu, Amazon, and other marketplaces. The original machines are surprisingly useful for their size, but they leave plenty of room for improvement.
The stock lathe is wobbly, flimsy, difficult to adjust, generic-looking, and has a spindle that sits unnecessarily low. This project aims to address those shortcomings while giving the machine a more substantial, industrial appearance.
The Upgrade
The project replaces several of the original plastic components with custom-designed 3D-printed parts:
- Headstock
- Tailstock
- Spindle/motor hood
- Adjustable tool rest
- Mounting components
- Custom knurled adjustment knobs
The original metal rails and appropriate mechanical hardware are retained, keeping the modification practical without attempting to reinvent the entire machine.
The result is a mini lathe that is more stable, easier to adjust, better suited to actual work, and considerably less ugly.
Because aesthetics are also engineering. Probably.
Designed for 3D Printing
The parts were designed specifically with FDM printing in mind.
Rather than relying on extensive sanding to hide layer lines, the exterior surfaces incorporate a deliberate texture that breaks up the appearance of the printed layers.
For the finish shown here:
- Print the parts.
- Carefully pass a blow torch over the textured surfaces.
- Paint the main components black.
- Paint the adjustment knobs metallic brass or gold.
If you’re printing with black filament, the black paint can be skipped.
The combination of textured black surfaces and metallic brass/gold hardware gives the finished machine an intentionally industrial-age / vintage machinery aesthetic.
Important: Heat treatment with a torch requires care. Keep the flame moving and avoid overheating, deforming, or igniting the printed part. Work in a well-ventilated area and use appropriate safety equipment.

What This Project Fixes
The goal isn’t to turn a $50-ish hobby lathe into an industrial machine.
It’s to make the machine you already have less frustrating to use.
The modification focuses on:
- Improved stability
- Increased spindle height
- Better tool positioning
- Easier adjustment
- More substantial printed components
- Improved overall appearance
The result is still a small hobby machine, but one that feels much more intentional than the generic stock configuration.
